“When I was in elementary school, I saw a saxophone. A band came to my school, and I saw this guy get up and play this solo. And I said, “Oh man, what is that! That must be fantastic!” And I asked my mother could I have an instrument. She said, “Well if you go out and save your money.” So I went and got—I made me a shine box. I went out and started shining shoes, and I’d bring whatever I made. About three years later, my mother told me to look under the bed. I looked under the bed, and I took the horn and I played it as good as I played it last night—for the first time. That’s the honest-to-gosh truth.”

“When I started I bought the whole works. I got a box of picks because I
felt sure there would be the right one in there for me. I refused to play
unamplified, so I’m sitting in my house playing, you know - happy, but
when I used my brand new amplifier I guess I didn’t think about the
neighbours. Soon they started complaining pretty heavy. But I was enjoying
myself because it wasn’t noise to me, it was music.”
